From Inverness, comfortably — it is a long but sensible day and it is what most of this market sells. From Edinburgh it is roughly five hours each way, so about ten hours of driving for a handful of photo stops. You can do it, and people enjoy it, but you are buying a coach journey with Skye in the middle rather than a day on Skye.

On most Skye day tours, no. The most-reviewed one lists transport, a driver-guide, live commentary and digital written translations — and no castle entry. Its highlight says 'stop at Eilean Donan Castle', and stop is what it means: a photo stop from the outside at the most photographed castle in Scotland. Lovely, and not the same as going in.

On a day tour you will typically get Portree, the harbour town; Lealt Falls; and the Old Man of Storr seen from the road. If you have longer, the Quiraing and the Fairy Pools are the two that most reward the time, and both are walks rather than viewpoints. A day gives you the island's shape; two or three give you its ground.

No. The walk up is well over an hour each way and no day tour has that time — you will see it from the road, which is where most of the famous photographs are taken from anyway. If climbing it is the point of your trip, you want a base on the island rather than a coach seat, and probably two days minimum.

For a first look from Inverness, yes. For the island people talk about, no. One day gives you the shape, the views and the photographs; it does not give you the walks, the evenings after the coaches leave, or a second chance if the Cuillin is under cloud — which it can be all day, regardless of the forecast in Portree.

For a single day, the Inverness departure with by far the largest review base on this shelf — it runs Portree, Lealt Falls and the Storr with a driver-guide, and it is eco-certified. If you would rather have the Fairy Pools than Portree, other Inverness departures swap them in; that is a real difference in your day rather than a difference in price. Long enough that these are full-day tours, running down the Great Glen with a Loch Ness photo stop around Invermoriston before heading west to the bridge. Exact timings show against your date at booking, which is the only reliably current version — but plan on being out for the day rather than the morning.

Portree is the one every tour stops at and the one on the postcards — a harbour ringed with coloured houses beneath cliffs. It is genuinely lovely and genuinely busy. People who know the island will point you to smaller places on Sleat or up in the north instead, none of which fit into a day trip, which is a fair summary of the whole one-day trade-off.

Some do and some do not — it is one of the main differences between the Inverness departures. Tours that include the pools trade something else out of the day, usually time in Portree or on the Trotternish side, because Glenbrittle is a slow single-track run at the far end of the island. Decide which you would rather have before comparing prices.

Changeable, and it is the strongest argument against a one-day visit. Skye generates its own cloud and the Cuillin can be hidden all day whatever the forecast says elsewhere on the island. Bring waterproofs in every season, and treat a clear hour as the one to make the most of. No operator can promise you a view and the honest ones do not try.
